SPECIALTIES AND AREAS OF INTERVENTION

  • Clinical psychology is the area of psychology dedicated to the study and treatment of emotional, behavioral and relational disorders.

As the name suggests, the method used is the clinical method which, through a set of techniques and strategies, seeks to understand each individual case in depth, with a view to discovering the origin of the symptoms presented by the patient so that an effective therapeutic solution can be devised.

Clinical reading depends on the psychological school in which the psychologist was trained. At ID Clinics, we favor the eclecticism and integration of the main currents and schools of psychology: Psychoanalysis, Cognitive-Behavioral Psychology, Narrative Psychology, Humanistic Psychology and the Systemic Perspective. Our psychologists are highly specialized in the various areas of knowledge and psychological intervention. We invest in the highest level of training, promote the discussion of clinical cases at regular team meetings and participate in international congresses so that we can always provide the best response to those who entrust us with their inner lives.

We maintain close links with national and international universities, research and teaching. We are governed by the highest criteria of ethics, rigor and humanity. But above all, what defines us is the prioritization of love in the human condition. The relationship as the engine of healing. Psychology as the science of relationships. Each case is unique and we dedicate ourselves entirely to resolving it.

  • Psychotherapy is a process of self-discovery and self-revelation, aimed at all those who want to understand the fascinating paths of the human mind and the construction of their own personal narrative. The process of analysis brings light and awareness to the internal and relational dynamics that block the individual on the path of their existence, so that they can become a true agent of their future, towards happiness and well-being.

In the therapeutic relationship, where acceptance, ethical and technical rigor, empathy and trust are the essential pillars, the patient finds the space - "home" - from which they can set off on the incredible path of self-discovery, with the certainty of a safe haven to which they can always return.

To start a psychotherapy process, there doesn't have to be any psychopathology or clinical manifestations that require treatment. You just have to want to (re)find yourself!

The child I was cries on the road

I left her there to become who I am

But today, I see that what I am is nothing,

I want to get who I was,

    Where you left off

  • A medical specialty dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of emotional, behavioral or relational disorders.

The word Psychiatry comes from Greek and means "the art of healing the soul".

In fact, psychiatry does not only take into account clinical manifestations and current symptoms, but the patient's life trajectory in its many aspects and contexts is fundamental for a good diagnosis and effective treatment.

Human behavior is a continuous process of adaptation in which organic, psychological, cultural and environmental variables intervene. Thus, it is possible to understand that becoming psychologically ill can happen to anyone, depending on the possibility of adapting to the multiplicity of variables described and which represent, in many situations, the vulnerability inherent in the human condition and the unique circumstances of each person.

The enormous diversity of clinical manifestations treated in psychiatry have, in common, emotional suffering, interference with normal day-to-day functioning and the ability to achieve well-being.

Psychiatry's object of study is the whole person, from a multifaceted perspective that integrates both the most recent advances in science and the most idiosyncratic variables of the interiority of each one of us.

Treatment is always individualized, according to the clinical picture presented, and may include psychopharmacological and/or psychological intervention.

At ID Clinics, our psychiatrists, in addition to a solid training of excellence, meet the strictest ethical, integrity and humanity standards. Teamwork, particularly with Clinical Psychology, facilitates a coordinated and integrated response, in an interdisciplinary model of the highest quality.

  • Psychological Assessment at ID Clinics is an essential process that takes place in the context of psychological consultations, involving the application of a variety of objective and projective instruments over several sessions. This clinical procedure is based on solid empirical research and uses research methods and techniques to explore both personality and cognitive functions.

Psychological assessment is a crucial stage that precedes and accompanies any psychological intervention. The combination of data obtained through the clinical history, together with the results of the psychological assessment, allows for a more in-depth understanding of the history, functioning and specific challenges faced by the individual. In this way we are able to clarify the psychological processes that define the individual, thus guiding the development of a personalized and effective therapeutic plan.

At ID Clinics, our approach to Psychological Assessment is patient-centered, aiming to provide valuable insights that drive personalized and targeted care to promote the emotional and psychological well-being of each individual who seeks our services.

  • The demands of everyday life, the transition to parenthood, children, bills to pay, caring for dependent family members can make a couple forget about themselves as a couple and make each person forget to see in the other the magic that their heart has seen and chosen

The couple often forgets to grow up. And the elements of the couple grow apart. Betrayal gains ground in all sorts of ways.

Guilt, hurt, resentment, the empty space that is created (so often occupied by children, routines, responsibilities and appearances) come to dominate the relationship dynamics of those two people who no longer recognize each other. Aggression ensues and communication difficulties grow because they both attack each other - with words, with silences, with absences, with a lack of affection.

Other times, the companionship and respect remain, but the flame and desire have gone. "We're good friends...", many couples tell us, with the sadness of missing who they were and the hopelessness of no longer believing in magic.

We're here to help couples find themselves again. To recognize themselves.

We cannot violate or interfere with each couple's philosophy of happiness. Each couple has a unique way of finding happiness and harmony. We can't evangelize the couple by following preconceptions or defined ideas of marital happiness. Therefore, while respecting the unique idiosyncrasies of each couple, couple therapy at ID Clinics seeks precisely to facilitate this reunion, anchored in solid constructivist and systemic training and, above all, in the deep admiration we have for the couples who come to us - for their humility and courage in facing their problems, for stripping away their defenses and revealing their vulnerability, for not giving up on finding and rediscovering the love that unites them.

  • Sport and Performance Psychology is a specialized area of psychology that studies and intervenes in the mental and emotional factors that influence human performance in highly demanding contexts.

More than just working on performance in competition, this specialty seeks to promote a balance between mind and body, helping athletes, coaches, teams and professionals from other areas to develop resilience, focus, self-confidence and emotional management.

At ID Clinics, we understand performance as a transversal concept:

    • In sports, we support athletes and teams in optimizing their concentration, consistency and motivation, as well as in the recovery process after injury or moments of greater competitive pressure.

    • In the corporate context, we work with leaders and teams to improve emotional management, communication, leadership and decision-making skills in highly responsible environments.

    • On an individual level, we work with anyone looking to boost their performance, overcome internal blocks and align their psychological well-being with their personal or professional goals.

Sport and Performance Psychology is not just about "increasing results": it promotes personal growth, mental health and sustained excellence over time.

At ID Clinics, this specialty is coordinated by Dr. Carlos Filipe Fernandes, a psychologist with vast national and international experience, who has led psychology departments at leading institutions such as the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar and Sport Lisboa e Benfica, and who currently co-coordinates the Postgraduate Course in Sports Psychology at the Catholic University of Porto.

  • Family Therapy at ID Clinics is an approach indicated for situations in which the symptoms presented by a family member are the result of dysfunctions in the family system as a whole.

In these cases, although there is an identified patient who manifests the symptoms, the intervention focuses on the family as a whole, exploring the dynamics between the various family members and subsystems. Family dysfunctions can vary widely, including communication problems, alliances between different subsystems against other members, among others. These dysfunctions can affect the whole family or just part of it.

For Family Therapy to be effective, it is essential that all family members are willing to participate and implement the necessary changes. This type of therapy is especially useful at times of transition, such as during adolescence, when the family faces challenges in adapting to the growing autonomy of one of its members.

Family therapy at ID Clinics aims to facilitate communication between family members, helping them to reorganize and change ineffective patterns of functioning. Our aim is to promote a healthier family environment, in complete harmony and which contributes to the well-being of all its members.

  • Sexuality is not restricted to the sexual act, but is a central dimension in the life and well-being of the individual.

Nor is it restricted to the biological and physiological. On the contrary, sexuality is one of the most controversial and emotionally charged areas of human behavior, culture and morality.

Human sexuality condenses within itself all the issues linked to intimacy, complicity, self-love and love for others, but also all the issues linked to any traumas experienced, difficulties in accepting oneself, internal conflicts between desire and morality, religion and society.

Psychosexual development is closely linked to education and the establishment of attachment relationships throughout life.

That's why the full and satisfying experience of sexuality is crucial to the individual's well-being and happiness. This is where Clinical Sexology can help. Because we know that sexuality is an area that can cause great discomfort for the individual and the couple. Because sexuality remains an area of difficult communication. Because exposing difficulties with intimacy and sexuality makes people feel exposed, naked and helpless. Because, as the great teacher Prof. Doctor Joaquim Luís Coimbra says, there really is nothing deeper than our epidermis.

At ID Clinics, you can count on the leading experts in this field who, without judgment, will help you solve your problem with the utmost ethical, technical and human rigor.

  • The Support Groups at ID Clinics provide psychological support in a group setting, where participants share similar diagnoses, social skills, experiences and concerns. This format facilitates a collective journey, promoting mutual support and personal growth.

During the sessions, various exercises, knowledge-seeking activities and the application of specific strategies are carried out to help each member of the group. The issues dealt with in the support groups often reflect themes addressed and analyzed in individual consultations, such as depression, self-esteem, anxiety, bereavement, acceptance of sexual orientation (coming out), lack of social support, addictions, relationships, among others.

Group therapies are effective for acquiring problem-solving strategies, self-acceptance and improving psychosocial skills. Participants find in support groups a safe and welcoming space that promotes acceptance, understanding, commitment and mutual support.

The Support Groups at ID Clinics are ideal for those looking to better understand their concerns and develop coping skills, drawing on shared experience and collective support. This group environment offers a unique opportunity for growth and emotional empowerment.

  • Vocational Guidance is a process of discovery and identity building, aimed at all those who are at the point of choosing or redefining their academic and professional path.

More than just help in making a decision, this is a space for reflection, self-knowledge and clarification of values, interests and skills. It is a path that seeks to integrate not only cognitive skills or external opportunities, but also the emotional and relational dimension that accompanies each choice.

In the therapeutic relationship, marked by empathy, trust and ethical rigor, the individual finds a safe space to explore their doubts, ambitions and fears. Through psychological assessment, clinical interviews and structured dialogue, the aim is to build a life project that is coherent with their identity and promotes motivation, personal fulfillment and well-being.

At ID Clinics we believe that a vocation is not just a chosen profession, but the authentic expression of who we are and the contribution we wish to make to the world.

  • Psychological intervention with lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people or those questioning their identity

Sexual orientation refers to sexual and/or romantic attraction to other people (e.g. heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality), which is a subjective and fluid process. Gender identity, on the other hand, refers to a personal and profound self-recognition of being a boy/man, girl/woman or non-binary person, and can thus be called cisgender when the sex assigned at birth is the same as that with which the person identifies, and transgender when the sex assigned at birth is different from that with which the person identifies.

For a long time, non-hegemonic sexual orientations and gender identities were considered pathological, and there is still a long way to go to combat stigma, prejudice and misinformation.

In this sense, clinical practice must be culturally competent, recognizing the impacts of stigma on these life paths and considering the psychosocial risks they so often face: family rejection, social isolation, dropping out of school, the invisibility of growing up in a context where it is assumed that all people are heterosexual and cisgender, the challenges of coming out, the internalization of prejudice, the pressure to conform to gender norms or the absence of models of intimacy are just a few examples.

In a systemic intervention, working with significant contexts (e.g. school) and the family recognizes and validates relational processes, with a view to promoting personal, family and social well-being. Affirmative multidisciplinary intervention thus starts from the celebration of sexual orientation and gender identity as expressions of the diversity of sexuality and human identity, creating safe spaces for exploration and possibility: for freedom.
